How to solve Easy Sudoku effectively?

At the Medium Sudoku Puzzles level, puzzles become more challenging—fewer obvious numbers, more possible candidates in empty cells, and patterns that require strategic thinking. While techniques from earlier levels, such as finding missing numbers, scanning rows and columns, eliminating candidates, Naked Pairs, and Pointing Pairs, are still useful, more advanced methods can help eliminate incorrect possibilities in complex ways.

1. Identifying “Hidden Pairs”

Sometimes, two numbers can only appear in two specific cells within a row, column, or 3x3 block—even if those cells contain other candidates as well. When this happens, these cells must contain only those two numbers, allowing you to eliminate other possibilities. Follow these steps:

➡ Scan a row, column, or 3x3 block for two cells that share the same two candidate numbers, even if they contain additional candidates.

➡ If those numbers cannot appear anywhere else in that section, eliminate all other candidates from those two cells.

➡ This helps narrow down possibilities, making it easier to solve the rest of the grid.

Example:

If two empty cells in a row can only contain 3 and 7, and these numbers do not appear anywhere else in that row, they must be placed in those two cells. This means other candidates in those cells can be removed, helping to clarify the rest of the puzzle.

2. Using the “X-Wing” Method

The X-Wing technique eliminates numbers across the entire grid when a digit appears in exactly two cells in two different rows, aligned in the same two columns (or vice versa—two columns aligned in the same two rows). Follow these steps:

➡ Select a number that can appear in only two positions in two separate rows and check if those positions are in the same two columns.

➡ If so, that number must go in one of those two positions in each row, meaning it cannot appear anywhere else in those columns.

➡ Eliminate that number from all other cells in the affected columns.

Example:

If 9 can only appear in two positions in rows 2 and 7, and both of those positions align in columns 3 and 6, then 9 must be placed in one of those two cells in each row. This allows you to remove 9 from all other cells in columns 3 and 6, simplifying the puzzle.

3. Applying the “Swordfish” Technique

The Swordfish technique is an extension of X-Wing, but instead of two rows and columns, it involves three rows and three columns. Follow these steps:

➡ Look for a number that can only appear in up to three cells across three different rows or columns.

➡ Check if these cells align in the same three columns or rows, forming a linked pattern.

➡ If they do, that number must go into one of those three cells in each row or column, allowing you to eliminate it from other locations.

Example:

If 4 can appear in three different rows (e.g., 2, 5, and 8) but always aligns in the same three columns (e.g., 1, 6, and 9), then 4 must be placed in one of these positions in each row. As a result, 4 can be removed from any other cells in those columns, helping you solve the puzzle.
